Kashmiri Carpet Weaving Art

Kashmiri carpets are renowned through out the world mainly for two reasons one being that they are hand made and second they are always knotted not tufted.

The Art of Hand Weaving Carpets was introduced in the valley by Holy Saints who travelled to Kashmir from Hamdan, an old city of Persia, now better known as Iran.

These saints brought with them the Artisans and Traders, they helped people of kashmir to learn art of Weaving Carpets, making Paper Machcie' , an art of crearting decorative masterpieces out of paper pulp, wood carving, embriodery, shawls etc.Most prominent among these saints who left indelible imprint on the art and culture is Hazrat Mir Syed Ali Hamdani ^(RA),who left no stone unturned to make Kashmir a leading civilization in the field of art, architecture, crafts etc.The knotting of carpet is the most important aspect, determining its durability and value, in addition to its design. Basically, the more knots per square inch, the greater its value and durability. A single knotted carpet is fluffier and more resistant to the touch, there is no 'right' and 'wrong' side to brush it.

To continue the legacy of carpet weaving art, Umar Carpets is weaving carpets since 1920, firm indulges in producing various types of carpets which include Silk on Cotton Carpets, Silk on Silk Carpets.The genesis of the firm can be traced back to the erstwhile East India Co. established by the British empire during their rule of India.The firm weaves carpets on the wooden hand looms, the firm's carpets are exculsively hand knotted and their designs and quality have been appreciated through out the world, by virtue of this the firm has built a good cutomer base in India as well as in rest of the world.Owing to the quality and traditional designs of the carpets , the firm is exporting carpets to various countries.

Silk Kashmiri carpet possesses knotage of 256 Knots/Square inch and is weaved using Silk Yarn with Silk Pile, they are charaterized by being very flexibile and having shiny and smooth texture. The Silk Kashmiri carpetsare made predominantly in the Srinagar area of Kashmir , and generally confined to the men of the family, though nowadays, women are also entering the trade. These exquisite creations are hand-knotted on the warp threads, one at a time, in accordance to a strict code of colors in the order of their appearance in the pattern.

Carpets bear Cotton based thread and is knottted with synthetic Silk Yarn possessing 256 knots/Square Inch.Such type of carpets are heavy as compared to other type of carpets. They don't possess as glossy look as is possessed by the other carpets
